The International Chamber of Commerce has released the ICC Incoterms 2020 update of their international trade terms for the sale of goods on September 10, 2019. Incoterms defines the responsibilities of sellers (exporters) and buyers (importers) engaged in cross-border trade regarding the delivery of tradable goods. These are the standards regarding the delivery methods created by the International Chamber of Commerce “ICC”.

What are the key changes in Incoterms?

Free Carrier (FCA) Key Changes & Updates:

The most crucial change in Incoterms 2020 rules relates to FCA. FCA delivery term is divided into two subgroups for sea and road freight. The reason for this was the problems experienced in ship loading, especially in sales with letters of credit, although there were no problems in truck loading. The seller’s responsibility ended when the freight was delivered at the port, but banks request a bill of lading with an on-board notation.

The seller does not control shipments under the FCA term, so the carrier has no obligation to the seller. With Incoterms 2020, the buyer company will be able to add a condition to a contract with the seller that “the shipping company will deliver the bill of lading to the seller company. Shipment charges and all risks belong to the buyer, but the bill of lading will be given to the buyer. Finally, the buyer sends the BL with the document set to the bank by the buyer.

In Incoterms 2010 and earlier versions, the main problem with FCA was that, in multi-shipments and especially in maritime transport, before loading the export cargo on the ship, for example, the delivery obligation of the seller was completed at the port entrance. For example, if a letter of credit was made, the bank requested the bill of lading from the exporter and held responsible for the details that should be written on the bill of lading.

However, the seller was liable for the document that he was not responsible for when his relationship with the shipping company was completed. This problem was resolved with the revision made in Incoterms 2020. FCA has changed to allow the buyer and seller to agree that the seller will get an on-board bill of lading.

Changes Regarding CIF and CIP

In Incoterms 2010, insurance policies on CIF and CIP shipments were prepared with a minimum level of coverage. Within the scope of Incoterms 2020, it has been decided that the “Clauses (C) of the LMA / IUA Institute Cargo Clauses” which is currently valid for CIF will be insured at the minimum insurance level.

For CIP shipments, “Clauses (A) of the Institute Cargo Clauses”, ie insurance including all risks, is mandatory. DAT changed to DPU

The rule is known as DAT (Delivered At Terminal) under Incoterms 2010 has been renamed DPU. DAT was renamed DPU (Delivered at Place Unloaded) to emphasize that the address to which the goods will be delivered can be anywhere, not just a terminal. The most common types of DC Container

The outer length of the 20′ container is 6.058 mm. The width is 2.438 mm. The height is 2.591 mm.

Internal dimensions: We need to know the interior dimensions of the container to calculate how much space the cargo to be transported will take up in the container. The interior dimensions of the 20′ container have been determined as 5.710 mm (length), 2.352 mm (width), 2.385 mm (height). The 20′ container volume is 33 m3.

When planning Dry Container loading, door dimensions should be considered. The door opening is 2,343 mm wide and 2,280 mm high.

The 40′ container has a length of 12.192 mm. Its width and height are the same as 20′ container. The width is 2.438 mm. The height is 2.591 mm.

It has the same dimensions as a typical dry container, except that it doesn’t have a “fixed-top”. 20 Flat Rack / 40 Flat Rack / 40 Closable Flat Rack

Sometimes its referred to simply as “flat”. This type of container has no four sides and no top. Sometimes both heads can be dislodged. The flat container is suitable for loading goods with both sides and overflow. The surcharge is added to the transportation fee for the loads exceeding the container dimensions.

20 “and 40” containers are the most commonly used equipment. If your items do not fill the 20 “container, you need to do partial loading, i.e. LCL. In any case, you should box all your items with numbers and labels and prepare a packing list showing which items are in which box. However, if its  “LCL”, you should prepare an extra-label for all boxes which include your name, destination address and your mobile number. Remember, there will be parcels of many people like you in an LCL, and it is very important to add information tags to each box to avoid confusion.

Step 1, contact with freight forwarder: Our first advice is to contact us. The pricing stage will become clear after the number, volume and weight of the products to be transported, that is, after packaging, but before starting the packaging process, it is useful to learn important information and tips from our expert staff.

Step 2, packaging & preparing the packing list: We recommend you to pack your personal products on your own. You can get professional service in this regard, but it will be economical to do the packaging on your own and protects you from possibility of damage to items and possible customs problems that may arise as a result of improper packaging or labeling. Step 3, organizing the inland transportation: After packing your personal effects or household goods, you can load them into a truck and send them to the warehouse or port where the container will be loaded. A second option is to send the container to your address and your items will be loaded directly. The container going out of the port, i.e. external loading, is a separately priced process. After the packaging process is over, it is important for the container return to the port in the same day, so that no additional costs occur.

Step 4, Exportation & Shipping: Your personal effects will be shipped after the export & customs process we guide you through this whole process. From Australia to the European region and Turkey in maritime shipping takes place from 26 to 32 days depending on the ship schedule we will choose.

Step 5, Customs In Destination Port: Used personal effects and/or used household goods are tax-free  (duty-free) in Turkey (personal effects have been yours for at least six months.) However, only the people can benefit from tax exemptions in order to reside in Turkey. So at this stage, Residence Permit, rental contract for a 24 month period or property title/deed is required.

Turkish citizens who have lived abroad for at least 24 months can also benefit from tax exemption.

The customs process takes about 4-5 days. At this stage, the owner of the goods must be personally involved or a customs broker has acted on behalf of. Our company delivers your item to you, depending on the type of agreement (port or address delivery) after you complete the customs process.

This article is, as far as we know correct at the time of writing. So you are wanting to relocate overseas and want to send all of your personal items or household goods overseas?

Here are some vital points you should consider.

If you are moving overseas and wish to pack up your entire house, furniture, personal items, small household goods and so on – it may be more cost effective for you to do it yourself and pack your own container.

Significant savings can be made with this approach and there are two ways to do it.

1. Pack up your household goods yourself and pack your own container. With this method, we can arrange for a container to delivered to your home, you pack the container yourself, and then we arrange for the container to be picked up and taken to the nearest port for shipping.

There are a few things which must be taken into consideration. The container size – do you have room on your property for the container to be safely loaded?

If not, you have a couple of options.

Firstly, we can send out the container to your property on a truck – you can pack your goods straight into the container. This can be costly depending upon how much time it takes you to pack the container and also how well you pack your goods themselves and within the container, be sure your packing is adequate or you may risk some of your goods being damaged in the container due to poor preparation and packing.

Secondly, you can apply to your local council for a permit enabling us to leave a container on the kerb or nature strip outside of your house – if your council allows this.

The container must be able to be left legally. We need to have evidence that you have the permit or the driver will not leave the container. Councils will fine the company leaving the container if there is no official permit – so this is not something which can be ignored, it is a necessity.


2. And this is the easier option, which is two steps, Hire a local removalist to pack up your household goods (we can assist with this or you can pick your own), they will arrive and pack up your house for you. You pay the local removalist directly – so you control this cost yourself.

Then they drive their truck containing your goods to our depot and transload your goods into your container for you – or the removals company can arrange delivery of your container to their own depot – they pack the goods into your dedicated container and then we arrange delivery of the container to the port for shipping.

You would then need to arrange for yourself the reverse process at the end destination. Unfortunately, we are not set up to provide clearance and delivery services at the other end.

This is by far the easiest method. It is mostly hands off for you, and you still make excellent savings when you compare the cost of this ‘do it yourself’ method over choosing a removalist company who can do the entire job for you.

If either of these options appeals to you – you need to figure out what size container you will need. Generally a 20 foot container is large enough for most household removals, if you have a larger (much larger) than normal load, or you wish to ship your motor vehicle as well, you may require a 40 foot container.

We have arranged many overseas relocations or household removals using this method. It may seem a little more work – but the savings are generally well worth it.

Easy countries for this type of ‘do it yourself’ household removal are New Zealand, USA, Canada, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, UK, Europe and South Africa – mainly because of easy shipping from port to port and arrangement of clearance and transportation of cargo from the port to your end destination.

Other countries can of course be done, just check regulations with regards to clearance of goods at your port of destination and the availability of transhipment via train and/or truck to the end destination – which can be a touch more difficult in countries such as parts of Africa.

The major production and export from New Caledonia is nickel, which is predominantly shipped as ore in huge volumes to Japan and Europe for processing.

Exports to Australia are very minimal, but because of mining, there is some machinery that is exported from New Caledonia to Australia for refurbishment or parts.

New Caledonia is a GAS (Giant African Snail) country, and any import from New Caledonia is subject to very stringent DAFF (Quarantine) checks.

Despite the nearness of New Caledonia, freight rates for air, courier, or seafreight are very expensive.

Port charges in Noumea are government controlled for both import and export, and are in addition to any freight rates quoted and are relatively expensive.
